Opening Day 2008!
Dear Mr. McCourt/Mr. Colletti: We really only need one (1) big bat and a couple of decent pitchers. That's it. We did pretty well without Furcal (though please try and sign him). Please don't trade away our good-but-uprovens (Clayton Kershaw, Matt Kemp--ok, maybe Matt Kemp) for a Peavy. Please. Give 'em the scrubs. Go after Sabathia. Go after Ramirez. Go after Randy Johnson. And keep the cheap seats cheap. Thank you.

The Winter General Manager meetings are about to begin, and already the talk of the conference is whether or not Manny Ramirez will be 41 or 42 when his contract expires. But ManRam is not the only free agent the Dodgers have in their sights, not by a long shot. We still need a third baseman (Blake said he'd like to come back), a shortstop (Furcal too, but he and his bad back are testing the waters), pitching (sign Maddux!). Oh and that guy with the dreads.

PS. Here's a tip from BLUE-BLOODED, Mr. Colletti, free of charge: Sign Trevor Hoffman.
OFF SEASON Bits & Pieces

The Dodgers appear to be considering Randy Johnson as one of their starters in '09. According to GM Ned Colletti (via DODGERS.COM):

"We need a veteran starter and we've got a few people in mind," said Colletti, declining to specifically discuss Johnson, who pitched for manager Joe Torre in New York for two seasons.

BLUE-BLOODED says bring on the Big Guy. We know we know, he's been injury-prone the last few years, most notably for his surgically repaired back, but here's three quick reasons:

1. He's a workhorse. After a strong start last season (yes yes, with injuries soon after) Johnson came back to finish with 184 innings and a 3.91 ERA.

2. He's five victories away from 300. He's a shoo-in for the Hall, but with 300 big ones, he's a sure lock.

3. He's mean as hell. Cranky, ornery and imposing, with all-time credentials, he's one of the last no-nonsense competitors playing today. When he finally does retire, baseball will (no pun intended) lose one of its giants.
