A gigantic city should have at least more
than one place to get a decent hamburger.
You drive around L.A., and the freeways, and all
at ten dollars a gallon, and one day you wonder:
is there only In-n-Out?
I know a guy and his brother who have a small shop in Alhambra, selling t-shirts and fixing cars, and a lot of times after school or work I go over there to talk about baseball. I say, “Everybody knows the best hotdogs are Dodger Dogs. But the best burgers? Besides In-n-Out?” And they say, “The best burgers are right there, right around the corner,” and they point down the alley to a little place literally right around the corner, called Café on 2nd.
So we walked in, and almost instantly we were greeted by the owner, who sat us down at one of the clean, wooden tables. My friend and his brother are regulars, and he points to them and says, “The regular?” My friend’s brother says “Yep, and could you make it three?”
The regular that my two friends eat each and every time they come here is the Tex-Mex Cheeseburger. When it comes to our table, the meat is smoking. The first bite is delicious. The meat is hot, and feels fresh. The beef falls apart in small, soft clumps in your mouth, kind of like a burger from home. And they are, since the burgers are rolled by hand in the small kitchen. The fries that come on the side are pretty good, too. And since the place is so small, it is always easy to get a hold of someone to help you. Perhaps the best thing about the place is their food specials: 5 tacos for five bucks, done the right way and with onions, salsa and cilantro, or the regular burger special, complete with fries, for only $3.25.
As I finished my food, my friend and his brother looked at me as I smiled in greasy happiness. They knew that I was converted. But those guys are crazy anyway. My burger was big enough, but the brothers ordered the Double Tex-Mex, the only ones to ever be able to do so and actually finish it.
I highly recommend the Café on 2nd, in Alhambra. Be sure to order the Tex-Mex Burger. And be prepared to wait for a little while. The burgers stay raw right up until the order is placed, which sometimes takes 15 minutes or so to cook. But when it finally comes, man, is it worth it.
