Sure you've heard this one by now, but i have it on repeat cuz of how it reminds me of stumbling through Hollywood after a night of getting down at Beat-It. Sigh, the good 'ol days.
Good side-step, DJ-make-'em-dance song. Of course any mention of Babs demands a shout-out to my girl Whit. Long live the Queen. Music nerds: spot the cameos in the video and be proud of yourself.

"My hard drive crashed and I lost mostly all of the music I collected since 1998, and I only had a small number of the albums i did not sell or give away...
I was depressed for a long while, but in the end, What are you gonna do. This little article is pretty much my way of restoring my collection - along the way discovering new stuff and rediscovering faithful jams....."
Jamie Lidell: Wow, this guy. First heard him on a video game soundtrack and holy crap. The instrumentation is weird and on-point, but listen to all of what he does and you realize the dude has pipes. Probably the funkiest soul music you've never heard of. Here's proof he's white:
Amy Winehouse (1983-2011)
When she died last week, a friend of mine asked exactly what the big deal was with Amy Winehouse. I wasn't sure myself. I just knew I could dig her music, and her. Later, the more I saw of her in the gossip mags, graceless and skinny, I kept trying to justify her music more and more. Sadly, now we'll never know enough about her. I hope she's finally resting.
The first of the small wave of English lady-soul singers, her voice, rough lyrics, bad-girl image (and that hair) kept her far apart from the likes of the Adeles and Joss Stones and Alice Russells and Duffys.
